Corpus Callosum shape analysis: a comparative study of group differences associated with dyslexia, gender and handedness

چکیده
This paper investigates the extent to which the shape of one of the brain structures, the Corpus Callosum, is correlated to (or moreover, can predict) the gender, handedness or presence of dyslexia. A second goal is to apply a common shape analysis framework to several datasets (totaling 132 CC shapes) previously employed in the literature, as an attempt to mitigate the partly contradicting results that have been reported. As the main result, a statistical shape analysis reveals a significant difference in CC length between the group of normal and the group of dyslexic subjects. Moreover, a classification system based on the length of the posterior midbody region can accurately classify normal/dyslexic subjects about 80% of the time in the two different datasets we have available: a 54 (26 normal and 28 dyslexic) and a 28 (12 normal and 16 dyslexic) CC shape set. As far as we know, this is the first attempt to automatically predict dyslexia based on the characteristics of the Corpus Callosum extracted from MR images.

The relation of planum temporale asymmetry and morphology of the corpus callosum to handedness, gender, and dyslexia: a review of the evidence.
Asymmetry of the planum temporale in relation to handedness, gender, and dyslexia is reviewed. The frequency of rightward asymmetry is rather higher than are estimates of the proportion of right hemisphere speech representation in the general population. Conversely, the frequency of leftward asymmetry is lower than the proportion of the population with left hemisphere speech. Neuro-anatomic asy...
متن کاملPredicting dyslexia based on the shape of the Corpus Callosum in MR images
This paper investigates the extent to which the shape of one of the brain structures, the Corpus Callosum, is correlated to (or moreover, can predict) the presence of dyslexia. A statistical shape analysis reveals differences in CC shape between a group of 20 normal subjects and a group of 20 dyslexic subjects. Moreover, a classification system based on the length of the isthmus region can accu...
متن کاملAn MRI study of sex - and age - related differences in the dimensions of the corpus callosum and brain
Introduction Corpus callosum dimensions, morphology and sex-related differences have been of interest to scientists, because they influence the performance of callosotomies in patients with intractable epilepsy. Reports describing numerous conflicting studies have been published with respect to variations in the size of the corpus callosum relative to handedness, gender and age. Witelson [1] fo...
متن کاملLess developed corpus callosum in dyslexic subjects--a structural MRI study.
BACKGROUND Based on previous studies and due to the characteristics of dyslexia as an auditory phonological decoding disorder, we predicted that the shape of the posterior corpus callosum (CC) would differ between dyslexic and control subjects. METHOD Twenty right-handed boys with developmental dyslexia were selected from a carefully screened general population sample (mean age 11 years) and ...
متن کاملThe Effects of Handedness and Bilateral Saccadic Eye Movements on False Alarms in Recognition Memory
Handedness can be used as a marker for interhemispheric interaction, which can produce memory benefits. Bilateral saccadic eye movements can be used to manipulate levels of interhemispheric interaction. This study measured the effects of handedness and bilateral saccadic eye movement on memory using the Deese-Roediger-McDermott paradigm. This study predicted a memory advantage for left-handers ...
